I could feel it in my bones I was breaking inside I decided long ago Not to lay down and die Breathing Again For the first time in a long time now The world didn’t end And I recovered so much stronger We are all fragile things Broken wings meant to fly And I would rather fall again Than sit around wondering why Breathing Again For the first time in a long time now The world didn’t end And I recovered so much stronger And I know my best days are still in front of me And as I go on I will remember to breathe Breathing Again For the first time in a long time now The world didn’t end And I recovered so much stronger than I began Breathing Again Breathing Again

Rewind 03:45
Summer rain massacred the sky Seemed to fall just for you and I I needed you You needed me too If I could just rewind back to one day And do it one more time I would say I would choose the one that ends with you I would choose the one that ends with you Here we are just the two of us Years between have been glorious You needed me I needed you more If I could just rewind back to one day And do it one more time I would say I would choose the one that ends with you I would choose the one that ends with you No matter where you are Nothing will divide us or tear us apart No matter where you go We always have the moments only we could know If I could just rewind And do it one more time I would say I would choose the one that ends with you I would choose the one that ends with you I would choose to spend my life with you

It’s a crazy world It can drag you down It can show you beautiful things I can promise you I’ve been to hell and back And I would do it all again Where do you belong? When everything goes wrong? When the walls come crashing down And no one is around It’s you and me at the end of the world Never let the fear Overwhelm your bones The world is waiting for you Where do you belong? When everything goes wrong? When the walls come crashing down And pin you to the ground It’s you and me at the end of the world Where do you belong? When everything goes wrong? When the walls come crashing down You’ll be safe and sound It’s you and me at the end of the world It’s you and me at the end of the world It’s you and me at the end of the world

Angry and afraid We all feel betrayed Hanging on to hope But it’s such a short rope And it’s a long way down from here Broken in two Is there anything we can do? It’s a Brand New America Home of the brave Is there anything we can save? It’s a Brand New America Such a great divide One more perfect lie Fire in the street At revolution’s feet You can feel it in the air Broken in two Is there anything we can do? It’s a Brand New America Home of the brave Is there anything we can save? It’s a Brand New America Broken in two Is there anything we can do? It’s a Brand New America Home of the brave Is there anything we can save? It’s a Brand New America It’s a Brand New America It’s a Brand New America

The Attic 03:00
In the attic of my heart I found a little box Damn thing was locked So I searched around my soul Didn’t find much there Damn thing was bear When the water starts to rise Hold your breath and I’ll hold mine It won’t matter if we survive We all gotta go some time In the dark I hear a scream Wonder who it could be Sounds a lot like me And I am trading in my blue skies For so much more When the water starts to rise Hold your breath and I’ll hold mine It won’t matter if we survive We all gotta go some time When the water starts to rise Hold your breath and I’ll hold mine It won’t matter if we survive We all gotta go some time We all gotta go some time We all gotta go some time From the ashes of a dream

There’s no doubt you’re beautiful Like you were born from another world But beauty has burned me before That’s not to say it wasn’t fun And I think maybe I could fall for you But listen to me when I say My love won’t wait for you My love is a Dangerous Thing I’ll take your breath away You could surrender to me now But I’m not sure I see the sport in that And maybe it’s all in my head My love won’t wait for you My love is a Dangerous Thing I’ll take your breath away My love won’t wait for you My love is a Dangerous Thing My love won’t wait for you My love is a Dangerous Thing I’ll take your breath away I’ll take your breath away

Suddenly 03:15
I was just minding my own business Nothing unique about this night Walking through open fields of circumstance alone Then I saw the light Suddenly something’s got a hold of me Something’s got control of me Something beautiful Suddenly I am lifted off the ground And if I am lost and found Would I want to be saved? It seems I got my back against the wall Not sure there’s much that I can do I could just try to make a getaway But I don’t know if I want to Suddenly something’s got a hold of me Something’s got control of me Something beautiful Suddenly I am lifted off the ground And if I am lost and found Would I want to be saved? I was just minding my own business Suddenly something’s got a hold of me Something’s got control of me Something beautiful Suddenly I am lifted off the ground And if I am lost and found Would I want to be saved? I got this feeling And I don’t know if I’m ever gonna fall in love again, again You should be leaving You’re a shiny disaster a lonely machine gun girl, oh yeah And I don’t mind wasting all your time You’ve already wasted mine Don’t come one more step closer You’re a shiny disaster You little devil You showed me a new way to feel now all I feel is pain Cry me a river You’ve outstayed your welcome Now go back just the way you came And I don’t mind wasting all your time You’ve already wasted mine Don’t come one more step closer You’re a shiny disaster Crazy what I put myself through Just to try and make it with you Some say love will find a way And I say it can find someone new And I don’t mind wasting all your time You’ve already wasted mine Don’t come one more step closer And I don’t mind wasting all your time You’ve already wasted mine Don’t come one more step closer You’re a shiny disaster

Into the dark And out of the light I am so far from home I know it’s hard But you have to try It is OK to let go This is my last goodbye See you on the other side Wonder where we go from here? Wonder where we go from here? To all of my friends Wherever you are I want to wish you well If we meet again Up in the stars Have I got a story to tell This is my last goodbye See you on the other side Wonder where we go from here? Wonder where we go from here? Disappear? Falling I’m falling I’m far beyond this world Falling I’m falling The last thing on my mind was you This is my last goodbye See you on the other side Wonder where we go from here?

about

And this is where the Bittersweet Machines story begins; my debut solo album.

The album is titled "Solituda" in part as a tribute to one of my favorite songs (Ma Solituda) by one of my favorite bands (Catherine Wheel) but also to put a point on the fact that I was going on alone (in solitude) for the first time in my musical career. I had been in bands for quite some time and really enjoyed the experience of an "us against the world" ethos but it was time for a change. Songwriting had become a passion and obsession. I was very interested in the process; the simultaneous balance of art & science required to craft "the perfect pop song"... as if such a thing exists. But when I looked at my recorded catalogue (up until this point) I maybe had like 3 songs that I would even remotely feel proud to share with anyone. The time that I had devoted to this craft was not showing up in recorded form. I felt like I was becoming a strong songwriter and if I focused on that discipline with the best producers and performers that I could find then maybe I could create a legacy worth sharing. I wanted to leave some small footprint on the vast beaches of rock & roll to show that I was ever even here. So with that I walked into Underground recording studio with my guitar, a handful of songs, and a headful of dreams.

Since I already had 6 songs completely written for this project - it started off as "let's just record a few songs and see what happens". Prior to going into the studio, I had already written:

"My Sweet Madman"
"Suddenly"
"Shiny Disaster"
"The Attic"
"Dangerous Thing"
"Brand New America"

I also had the start of what would become:

"Rewind"
"The Minerva Situation"

There was quite a bit of material to work with straight away. I was so excited by the progress we made with those first six songs that I quickly decided that this needed to become a proper full length album so I went about the business of writing a few new songs and continue to develop those early seedlings. Those later writing sessions yielded:

"Accidentally Beautiful" (for my daughter)
"You and Me at the End of the World" (for my son)
"Breathing Again" (for myself)

We began the initial recordings in April of 2012 and released the album in December of that year.
