about

After completing my 2018 album "No Bad Horizon" it was important for me to step away just to decompress and recalibrate. It was very good that I did because the first thing that I wrote after months off was "The Stars & Ground". I also happen to think it's one of the best things to come from BiTTERSWEET MACHiNES over the last 7 years. Someone very close to me struggles with anxiety and this was my way of letting her know to be unafraid of living and loving and getting hurt and making mistakes. Those are the best parts of life. Be unafraid to feel... the good and the bad. And I'll be there to support and celebrate all the way along her journey.

"Bitter Fruit" is a song that I wrote during the "No Bad Horizon" sessions. I always liked it but I wasn't sure that it fit the direction of that album. I'm glad that I held on to it because it gave me a strong place to start when it came time to start writing again. Not all relationships lead to love and that's OK. Perhaps we are setting ourselves up for heartache if our expectations are that they should. There's room to enjoy the relationships that fall short.

This release also includes the Bandcamp exclusive stripped version of "The One That Got Away". The formal version of this song can be found on the 2018 album "No Bad Horizon".

Track Name: The Stars and Ground
Hey, outside the window pane
It's just another day for you
So take it if you can
Fall in love and break your heart
You know it from the start
That life is better with the pain and scars

Calm down
You can lay your weary head down
Anywhere you go I'll find you
In between the stars and ground

Crash, a flicker and a flash
It all goes by so fast
There's no time to fuss around
We are more than we believe
The greatest tragedy by far
Is never knowing who we are

Calm down
You can lay your weary head down
Anywhere you go I'll find you
In between the stars and ground
Hold tight
Even if it is a long ride
I will always be beside you
There to keep you safe and sound
In between the stars and ground

Live with no regrets
With every single breath
Never miss the chance to take a stand for what you love
Track Name: Bitter Fruit
There is no blame to be leveled
We can both take our guns and lay them on the table
There are no words to be spoken
We can be safer in the silence 'til it's broken
Seems like some things are best unsaid

Maybe this isn't love
Maybe this isn't what we had hoped for
Maybe it's good enough
Like a bitter fruit that I can give to you

Coming undone
We unravel
Should we put it back together if it's fragile
We don't need validation
Whoever said that we require definition
This can be whatever we want

Maybe this isn't love
Maybe this isn't what we had hoped for
Maybe it's good enough
Like a bitter fruit that I can give to you
Bitter Fruit

There is no blame to be leveled
We can both take our guns and lay them on the table
There are no words to be spoken
We can be safer in the silence 'til it's broken

Maybe this isn't love
Maybe this isn't what we had hoped for
Maybe it's good enough
Like a bitter fruit that I can give to you
Bitter Fruit
(all that we are all falls down)
Track Name: The One That Got Away (stripped)
Our plastic world was easy to break
There was no love or time to take
Did I fail you?
I don't know why I feel this way
You move through my spine and divide my brain
The fire that burns is burning for you
What am I supposed to do?

Maybe you were right to leave
I couldn't make you stay
I can't help but wonder if you're the one that got away

Our plastic world was easy to break
There was nothing left for us to fake
Or believe in
I knew you could always see through me
I couldn't become what I seemed to be
And though it's not love I know it's real
What am I supposed to feel?

Maybe you were right to leave
I couldn't make you stay
I can't help but wonder if you're the one that got away

Our plastic world was easy to break
There was no love or time to take
Did I fail you?
